Bachelorette weekend in New Orleans

Last weekend, me and 4 others met in New Orleans for Freda's bachelorette party.  We stayed at the Sheraton Hotel on Canal St where we could easily get to multiple touristy spots without taking the cab too often.

The weather on Friday was not on our side - with downpouring rain all evening, it was pretty much impossible to do anything outdoors.  We had a dinner reservation at SoBou, a charming modern American style restaurant not far from the hotel.  This night was mainly a time for all of the girls to get to know each other, as we had two bridesmaids from New Jersey (Freda's high school and college friend respectively), and the other two from Houston (if I was to include myself in the Houston group, since it is technically where I met the bride).

The only wild thing occurred that night was when 3 random locals (and very much drunk) barged into our cab without warning and essentially coerced into sharing the ride.  The cab driver didn't say anything during the whole incident, so that baffled us.  Thankfully, we only had a few minutes of unpleasant moment with these 3 drunk strangers, and ultimately a free ride because the drunk passengers decided to pay for our ride due their "rudeness".   Only in New Orleans, I must say.

The weather held up much better the next day, so we took full advantage of exploring the area.  Our brunch was at Cafe Amelie.  I ordered a Sunny Side Up Cochon, which was two sunny side up eggs on top of pulled pork and cornbread pudding.  I still think about that dish to this day.  Maybe I can replicate a similar version at home one of these days...

We did a lot of exploring the rest of the day.  I was completely mesmerized by its charming, antique, French style architecture.  Almost every block we passed had live jazz music and showcase of local paintings and drawings.  We sure couldn't miss visiting Cafe Dumonde, an extremely popular place in New Orleans for its beignets and cafe au lait.

Later that night, we dressed up to something more 'appropriate' for a bachelorette night out on Bourbon Street.  Talk about a traumatizing experience! LOL  It's not that any of us really had any bad or crazy experience, but the experience on Bourbon St. can only be explained when you are actually there in person.  We had a few drinks here and there, but we certainly weren't the right group of bridal party to fully enjoy what Bourbon Street had to offer.

This trip definitely felt more like a girls' getaway weekend trip more than your typical bachelorette party, which I loved.  We enjoyed New Orleans restaurant scenes and the city's architecture greatly. I loved getting to learn more about all the women in the bridal party: academic advisor, university admission counselor, graduate student aspiring to become an organizational psychologist, assistant buyer, and pharmacist.  It felt great to be surrounded by intelligent, career-driven, independent women.  I can't wait to meet these ladies again, and moreover, witness Freda is getting married at a beautiful venue in Houston, March 2015!
