Getaway to NY

Boy did we have a busy weekend!  We were invited to Keri and Leland’s wedding, both some of Z’s closest high school friends.  We took an early flight out on Saturday morning and flew back home on Monday morning.  By the time we got home early afternoon, after eating lunch at a Greek fastfood restaurant, we were completely burned out.

Upon our arrival on Saturday we spent the rest of the day with Z’s mom, Sheng and Alice (2nd brother and his girlfriend), who all live on Long Island.  It was my first time seeing Sheng and Alice literally in years (I would say 3-4 years), so that itself was nice little reunion for me.  Z and I were already exhausted by the lack of sleep and dealing with horrendous New York traffic, but we spent a quality time catching up with them.  They took us out to a local Italian restaurant for lunch with complimentary wine (!!).  We watched the movie 5-year Engagement, which was pretty good, and browsed through hundreds pictures that were taken during their recent trip in Asia.  We definitely wished we had more time with them.

That night we said goodbye to Sheng and Alice to drive another hour to Z’s mom’s house.  The next morning we ate some delicious, fresh peach and blueberry pie that was bought from the farmer’s market.  Afterwards, we did a quick shopping at a nearby outlet mall to get wedding presents and buy dress pants for Z.  None of that was really on our agenda (except for the wedding presents), but we got spontaneous and I desperately wanted Z to get some new dress pants for work.  Two things I learned from that experience were that I could never become an intense shopper and Z likes pants from Express.

With little time left to get ready for the wedding, Z’s mom literally did everything what a mom would do – ironing all of Z’s clothes, wrapping up wedding presents, and even doing my hair! Yes, I never do hair other than straightening, but she took the time to create a braided updo for me.  I felt like a little girl getting super excited about mom doing her hair.  After a few prom-like snapshots, we quickly got into our rental car and drove for another 1.5 hour to the wedding destination – Montauk, NY.

Montauk is located at the very end of Long Island and has beautiful scenic views.  After attending the ceremony, we took a short detour to where the lighthouse was located to soak in the beauty of the East Coast.  Even through I have seen lighthouses before, I was still completely mesmerized by its architecture and location by the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.

The wedding reception was held at a restaurant not too far away from the ceremony site.  The best part of all was seeing Z’s undeniable happiness when he was reunited with all of his high school friends.  I have heard so much about all of his friends - all the great memories they created together during high school and the friendship they continued to cherish since then.  Many had already married and had children of their own now, but the they seemed to have kept the same personalities Z frequently mentioned before.  And then there is the married couple, Keri & Leland.  There are simply an adorable couple – they are one of those I-knew-you-since-high-school-but-couldn’t-say-anything-to-you-until-much-later type of couple.  The love was in the air!!  As an engaged couple, we were getting hyped up from every little moments during the reception and imagining how it would be for us in less than 4 months.  And honestly, going to their wedding allowed me to de-stress from my own wedding planning.  It motivated me after seeing the happy married couple and their guests.

It was such a short, but a really good trip.  A getaway to the East Coast was a nice little break from our usual life these days.  I loved the weather because I got to wear sweaters and scarves (!!), and a pleasant treat after a pretty chaotic August at work.  We are truly excited to invite these New York folks for our wedding and recreate the high school reunion!
