Two things that I am disappointed about today

  • Have you heard about the uproar after the Coca Cola's Super Bowl commercial?  For some reason I didn't get to see this commercial, but the media vomit (I label it this way because the media is vomiting the same news over and over...) caught my attention.  I am genuinely disappointed in this country and almost not surprised by how close minded we can be.
First of all, how in the world do Americans think that "America the Beautiful" is the National Anthem?  Also, the reaction is an insult to all the immigrants who embrace the newly adopted American culture and the heritage they brought from their own countries.  So, is it un-American for me to translate "America the Beautiful" in Korean and attempt to sing in Korean language because it's an American song?  And, is it un-American for me to communicate with my parents in Korean because we live in America?  While the education world tries to teach the next generation about the melting pot of America and the diversity and the history of this country, the whole social media is at war over with this one commercial that happened to air in various languages of an American song.  I find this whole reaction to be ridiculous and entirely saddening.

I'm sure there could a valid point in each side's argument.  I don't plan on going over every argument and try to assess its validity and logic.  I also certainly don't plan on offending anyone while reading this.  While I agree with the importance of learning English as a primary language in this country, it is truly tragic that all other representations in a form of language, or sometimes even physical appearances, can be so easily dismissed and insulted.  I get that it's a patriotic song, but referring other ethnicities in the commercial as 'terrorits' or 'illegal immigrants' is pure ignorant.  Singing this song in English doesn't automatically make you an American, and especially a patriotic citizen.

  • I realize that this is completely off tangent, but if you hear a voice message prompt, please leave a voice message.  Calling 10 times in a row isn't going to fix the problem when someone is away for a meeting and you're screaming over a voice mailbox.  I think most people think that admissions counselors are just tapping their fingers and eagerly waiting for a phone call all day long.  I'd like to think that we are getting paid in salary with benefits because there are more things for us to do other than waiting for a phone call all day.

Sigh...it has been one of those days.  Why are we losing more and more common sense and just basic logic?  Why everything has become so much about me, me, and me?  When did we lose all sense of respect?
