America’s Birthday

Happy Belated Independence Day!  Sorry for a delayed post but I had a busy weekend, and was exhausted!  As you know, this year is my first year to celebrate America’s birthday as an American, and let me tell you, I had a blast celebrating!  I always love the patriotic mood that goes around this time – the American flag, blue, red, white seen everywhere.  How was everyone’s 3 day weekend?  Let me just begin by saying that I have a secret prayer for a permanently extended weekend.  I know, it won’t happen anytime soon.

My college friend Linda, and a few of her friends, came into town for the weekend.  We spent Sunday evening with a fancy sushi dinner, viewing of the famous Kaboom Town fireworks (from distant, though) and catching up at Dan’s house, who is another college friend of ours.  Last I had seen her was a year ago, before I graduated, so it was nice to see her again.

Yesterday, me and Yo celebrated the birth of this country by gathering at On the Border for some delicious margaritas.  We shared a very filling appetizer.  We had originally debated about going to see the fireworks, but then we weren’t really up for dealing with crowds and heat.  In the end, we took the quiet/comforting route and spent the evening at my apartment.  A bottle of wine (courtesy of Yolanda) and beer brats took place as our dinner menu while we watched “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” directed by Clint Eastwood.  It’s probably the first year that I had not watched the movie “Independence Day” (not sure if I had made my own tradition…), but what we did yesterday was certainly something different in a good way.  It was nice to just stay in an air-conditioned unit with all the food available to me.  Call me lazy, but I wasn’t about to deal with those mosquitoes out there.

I know I briefly mentioned about the Kaboom Town fireworks earlier so I wanted to share some of the fireworks experience I had with those who didn’t enjoy real fireworks.  I hadn’t known about the popularity or the scale of Kaboom Town, but supposedly it’s one of the top 5 fireworks in the United States.  Of course by the time we got there, all the roads were blocked, but we were able to enjoy last part of the fireworks from far distance.  It was a delightful moment to watch colorful sparks in various shapes and forms.  I was thankful to spend the special weekend with friends.
