It’s been a while since I last wrote, but I’m glad to be able to focus on the week without having to write something. Sometimes I get that subconscious pressure – finding a topic to write and what not.
This week has been absolutely crazy. School is about to start and that means organized chaos for the student affairs division. There were lots of hype about several things even before school started – the new football stadium, the biggest donation in history by a UNT alumni, and bringing a new group of students…most ever in history, as well. The division was invited to the stadium to view it for the first time and been treated with prime rib and all sorts of deliciousness. The dining department needed to test if they can handle feeding the massive crowd before the first game. I certainly didn’t mind being the guinea pig. :)

Friday night, I had a relaxing night with lovely Allie, who just moved into her new apartment a week ago, and spent a night of watching Big Bang Theory, Thai food and a glass of wine. It was a perfect night to stay in before all the chaos that was about to occur soon.

This weekend was an unusually active weekend for me. Besides my usual attendance at the transfer orientation on Friday, I had to help my friend Yolanda move starting 8am on Saturday followed by participating in Sunday Fun Day at UNT, which also started at 8am. My favorite sleep-in habit vanished over the weekend. Somewhere between all of that was the cohort party. We all went to one of our friend’s house and attempted to keep ourselves cool in the pool. The weather was still painstakingly hot, but it was good to see my friends again.

Sunday Fun Day is when all students move in to their residence halls and numerous student & staff volunteer to help them move in. In a 105 degree weather, the help is more than necessary, I imagine. Me, my boss, and couple engineering students were at the engineering living community to greet the incoming students and their families. We gave out water bottles, free t-shirt (of course), a bag of goodies and just keeping them company. And yes, we sometimes had to jump in to resolve some “technical” issues….aka bunk bed. It was very exciting to meet new students, mainly men as expected, and to see them looking forward to school. It just makes me realize how important it is to have students on campus…it makes a world of difference. I absolutely loved the newborn of energy and excitement among students.

I began to think and realize that me & my parents went through this exact step 5 years ago. Although 5 years feel like a really long time, I still remember the mixed emotions of excitement, nervousness and uncertainty that floated in my mind during that move. To now be in a position where I can comfort these students and make sure that they have the most pleasant college experience makes me feel good about what I do. I sure do love working on a college campus. The chaos has returned but so did the vibrancy of the campus.
