The Day: Step 1
It has been quite a miserable week for my future hubby as he endured the final stretch of marathon studying for Step 1. And now the day has come! In 6 hours, he will begin the gruesome 8-hour medical board exam (this exam is the 1st of the 4 exams he has to take in the next several years; however, the most stressful one is this one). The two pictures above sum up his life - he either studied in his room or in the living room since I've been around. I tried to be the helpful future wifey by making 2 "nutritious" meals a day, doing laundry, and packing things that don't require much of his attention. I, of course, enjoyed lengthy amount of TV-viewing, particularly the Food Channel.
However, trying to get our apartment slowly settled without a lot of his input has been a little difficult for me. I have never been in a situation to become fully supportive for another person (I've only been cooking for myself and I didn't care what I ate), as well as trying to purchase bigger items for our use (like a brand new bed! - we eventually got one two days ago.). While he tried to participate in the decision-making process of those purchases, it often frustrated me that I eventually had to make executive decisions. Decisions for two people are incredibly hard!! My complaint is certainly incomparable to the amount of stress Z must have gone through since Janurary, but it was surely a learning lesson for me, too. I sometimes needed to be the leader, to carry on decisions with confidence. We're starting to understand that marriage wouldn't be all about lovey-dovey situations, and we are adjusting to having each other all the time (after 4.5 years of living at least 300 miles from each other, the adjustment is no surprise!)
Because the testing center is not on the island, Z is spending the night at a friend's place tonight. Not going to lie, a familiar taste of independence feels a little nice. :) While Z takes the awful exam, I will be going on furniture and bedset shopping, and drop off his lunch.
Please send him positive thoughts, so he can successfully complete his first board exam. And thank you to all of my grandparents who have been praying hard for him since the beginning of the year.
