Z and I have been wanting to do a weekly, or at least monthly, brunch as our new tradition ever since we moved to Houston. After a month of adjusting to full-time working life, sleeping early, trying to live together with compromise, and essentially learning how to embrace the grownup life, we finally decided to give it a try today. It was an exhausting week for me, though – now in full swing of things, I began to counsel students on my own and being on forefront of receiving phone calls AND working on Saturday for an event – so Z did the grocery shopping this morning and essentially did all the cooking. I cleaned our apartment to make it look more presentable for our guests and eventually helped Z with cooking.
We had several friends over – some of 3rd year medical student friends who now started the clinical rotation and some who used to belong in Teach for America with Z. Our good friend Eric, from Minnesota, was also in town for a friend’s wedding, so it was a great reunion. Our first official brunch consisted of sausages, eggs and cheese omelets, fresh cut strawberries, and sautéed onions and mushrooms. We also had some coffee and mimosas. It was wonderful to see our med school and TFA friends have great, fun conversations together. Very adult conversations were shared: our experiences with American education system (both secondary and higher education), funny incidents we dealt with students and patients (we certainly didn’t share names of these individuals… don’t worry!), and our concerns with the future. The last day of our weekend started out very relaxing and some fulfillment of social life was certainly appreciative. I personally love being surrounded by bright, intelligent individuals who can positively contribute to the society and are passionate about making some level of difference in this world.
Overall, it was a huge success! Z and I hope to continue this tradition as an opportunity to stay in touch with our friends.
