Mom’s First Visit

I was ecstatic that my mom was able to go wedding dress shopping with me in Houston this weekend!  As a housewife, she doesn’t always have the opportunity to travel by air as frequent as my dad and I do, so I was very happy when she said she will make the trip for me.  Of course, my dad didn’t hesitate substituting for the housewife role while my mom was away.  I bought her tickets as soon as my bridal appointment was confirmed.  This was her first air travel in 10 1/2 years, and although we were nervous for her (I think she was even more nervous), she handled it very well! She flew in Thursday night, late enough for me and Z to pick her on time, and headed back this afternoon.  It was a short time together, but we had a marvelous mother & daughter and her future son-in-law time.

For my wedding dress we went to the Nordstrom Wedding Suite in Galleria Mall because they had a variety of styles and pricing range that fit my interest.  With my office being in summer hours (it ends at noon on Fridays), we made an appointment on Friday afternoon hoping to find the dress for that special day.  We experienced the pinnacle of Houston’s Friday traffic, thus making it to our appointment without enough time to even eat lunch.  I plan on making a separate post on the whole wedding dress ordeal, so I’ll skip the details for now.

We finally had late lunch at La Madeline, and relaxed, after an intense bridal appointment.  We spent the rest of the afternoon at the mall doing “normal shopping, where I got lots of bargain deals.  My mom was so generous and bought everything for me.

Now that the whole purpose mom’s visit was fulfilled in one day, we spent Saturday just hanging out.  We shopped more at Marshalls, where my mom found some cute clothes, and ran errands at Target.  We also did a huge grocery shopping at 99 Ranch Market, mom’s first visit to an Asian supermarket, and filled our stomach with Korean food.  That evening we took her to a gelato place for dessert.

On her final day in  Houston, Z served us with homemade brunch and mimosa.  After quite a hectic and yet fun weekend, we started the day slow and relaxing.  We had lots of fun conversations about wedding plans and our new life together in Houston.  Coincidentally, all of us dressed up in stripes and we snapped a few photos with our phones for fun.

One of the biggest wishes during this wedding planning was to have my mom with me for dress shopping.  It would’ve been wonderful to have a couple of my closest girlfriends here as well, but I really needed mom the most.   I thought it would be a memorable mother-daughter experience, and it really turned out that way.  It was even more special because of the intimacy of the event.  And most of all, I’m so thankful that I had the whole weekend to myself with her.  With her working full-time in the past for many years, and then my departure to college 6 years ago, we never really shared that intimate mother-daughter time that many have had.  It was a wonderful weekend with my mommy!!

  1. Wow, what a great weekend! Congrats on picking a dress, definitely a moment you have to share with your mom :) Can't wait to hear more about it!

I'm helping the biology dept advisors with freshman orientation this summer and totally understand the challenges of working with teenagers and their parents! I'm not always a patient person, but I commend you for having a job that requires a lot of patience!
